6 Reasons Why Rubies Are Glorious

Throughout July, we've been celebrating this month's birthstone, Ruby. To end on a happy note, I decided to create a list of why rubies are excellent.
1. Rubies are Tough, just like us, ladies!
Rubies are a nine on the Mohs Scale of Hardness while Diamonds are a 10. They're an ideal alternative to Diamond rings, and you can wear rubies every single day if you desire. They also make excellent wedding bands. Our Beaded Ruby Ring is an excellent example. Isn't it pretty?
2. Rubies are Gemstone Royalty, Literally!
In Sanskrit, rubies are called "Ratanaraj," the king of gems. We can all agree that a gemstone with that type of name would make an excellent engagement ring.
3. Rubies Possess Both Figurative and Literal Fire
Rubies have associated with the fire of life for centuries. Under the sun, they fluoresce from the UV rays. These stackable ruby rings are excellent examples of how rubies can glow in the sunlight.
4. Rubies Are In The Bible
In the King James Bible, from the Proverbs 3:15, "She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her." Isn't that sweet? We had a client recently order a custom ruby engagement ring based on that verse. She used our Floral Accented Engagement Ring Mounting and had it cast in 14K yellow gold and had a fiery round ruby set as the center stone.
Here is another Biblical quote from Proverbs 31:10, "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." Our Gold Ruby Cross Pendant seems to fit the bill nicely.
5. Was A Center of Controversy
Due to military strife, rubies that originated in Burma, now Myanmar, were banned from the United States under the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE (Junta's Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act of 2008. Thankfully, after democratic progress and success in Myanmar, the ban on Burmese ruby was officially lifted on October 7th, 2016.
6. Plenty of Powerful Symbolism and Legends with Ruby
Aside from being a symbol of love and passion, rubies are said to bring peace and harmony amongst neighbors. They're also known to protect the wearer against evil—another reason to have a ruby in any engagement ring.
Shakespeare references rubies in his work, mostly for the fire mentioned earlier, and the iconic shade of red. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of my favorite plays, Shakespeare called rubies "fairy favors" or gifts. Who wouldn't want to have a fairy favor, like our Ruby and Diamond Scroll Ring, in their jewelry collection?
